Song Meaning of “Next” by The Weeknd
This song is all about a relationship gone wrong. The opening lines tell us of a love full of longing and promises with “We said no strings attached, but honestly I can’t see how that’ll last”. The narrator is a man who is in love and willing to take a risk in the relationship despite knowing it’ll likely fail. He is willing to take this risk because of just how strongly he is invested in it and the desire to have a real connection, “I wanted you to stay, a little longer and I wanted us to play, like we own the night”. Throughout the track we hear him regretting the things had would had been said and the mistakes he had made in the relationship, “I really wish that we could go back, but the deed is done, I fucked it up again”. This regret is a major part of the track and when the narrator talks about how “A hundred miles behind us, and I wanna start it all again” we can see that he is wishing for a chance to fix what he had done. Despite the fact the he knows it’s impossible he still holds onto hope that things could get better. In the chorus he sings of this hope, “No no, I’m not saying that I’m ready for the next one, but I’m ready for the next”. In the end the narrator is hopeful that he can find a new love and finally get things right.
