Song Meaning of “Dying Earth” by The Sword

“Dying Earth” by The Sword is a morbidly entrancing exploration of the ominous future we are heading towards. It speaks to us of a world that is slowly dying, a world filled with fear, destruction, and despair. The lyrics make it clear that this is a world in which our species has been wiped out, leaving only memories behind.

The song starts off with a declaration of impending doom, as the narrator is lone forced to reckon with the fact that his people are doomed. He speaks of “a wasteland of twisted steel” that was once his “prize and kingdom,” and of all the memories that have been rendered useless in a wasteland where “nothing lives.” He wishes for some sort of salvation from the inevitable, but knows that this hope is in vain.

The first chorus speaks to us of the inevitability of death, and of how our only solace is that “we all pass on”. He acknowledges that while we are all caught in an eternal cycle of birth and death, none of us will escape the passing of time, or the death of the Earth.

The second verse continues on the same themes of despair and hopelessness. He speaks of the state of the world, pointing out how “The trees are few, the earth is dry, the air is poison, and the sky is fire”.
