Song Meaning of “Chemicals” by The Spill Canvas

The Spill Canvas’s song “Chemicals” speaks of a relationship that has become too toxic. In the chorus, lead singer Nick Thomas paints a vivid picture of the love he once felt turning to hate, vividly describing it as “chemicals burning through our veins again.” He goes on to say that this type of relationship only leaves a bad taste in his mouth and though it’s an ugly truth, he feels it is necessary to recognize it.

In the first verse, Nick expresses what it’s like to be in this type of relationship. He speaks of being “buried under a sea of lies,” the two of them stuck in a vicious cycle with their words like knives that aim to hurt rather than to heal. The chemistry between them seems to be causing a reaction, “tearing us apart at the seams.”

Nick then sings in the second verse of the deep longing he has for the relationship to be different. He expresses a desperate hopefulness that the two of them will be able to find a way to break free from the toxicity and to find the love they once had. He promises to support his partner through anything they face, concluding that “I won’t let you drift away.”

The song ends with Nick lamenting the difficulty of ending things and accepting that the “chemicals” have been slowly destroying the relationship. He is clearly pained by the fact that something that used to bring joy can become such a source of sadness and despair, but acknowledges that sometimes it is necessary to recognize when something is no longer working and to end it. No matter what, Nick will be there to lend support and hopefully the two of them can one day reclaim the “chemicals” and rebuild the relationship they once had.
