Song Meaning of “Son of This Town” by The Porters

The Porters’; “Son of this Town” tells a story of someone that is searching for a sense of belonging and purpose in the small town they grew up in. Although they have lived there their entire life, they still feel like an outsider, looking for a way to find belonging. The chorus reflects the narrator’s sentiments:

Chorus:
I’m a son of this town, nobody’s son
Nobody’s people, just drifting along
I’m a soul on a mission, searching for something
To set me free.

The narrator is looking for some sort of divine intervention or cosmic alignment to free them from their loneliness and lack of belonging in this small town. In the bridge, they plead that “The stars might just align and show me divine, as I’m a son of this town” hoping that whatever’s out there might hear their request and help them find where they belong. As the song progresses, the narrator visits and experiences all the parts of the town and its people, trying to find a place to call home. By the end of the song, it’s clear that the narrator has come to terms with their status as an outsider within the town, and although they’ll never be fully accepted, they still have found a sense of belonging in the memories of the town and its people, even if they can’t ever truly call the town home.
