Song Meaning of “Biology” by The Finns
The Finns tell us the story of a man who can’t get over his ex-partner, in their track ‘Biology’. The lyrics attempt to make sense of the situation, in which the protagonist tries to understand why he can’t let go. He reconfigures the past over and over in his head, as if it was an equation that he must solve. He becomes obsessed with trying to understand the anatomy of his feelings, and why he can’t let go. He stares into the distance, lost in the complexity of his unrequited love.
The chorus reflects on the concept of ‘biology’ – what draws him to her, and prevents him from moving on. He desires to see his girlfriend in the present moment, instead of the distant memory. The guitar builds as he pleads to avoid the pain, to preserve himself in a steady state.
The ‘Biology’ is a reflection of the human experience. It speaks to the intensity of love and the complexity of longing. Just as the protagonist continue to attempt to answer the equation of his former love, we too are trying to understand how to make sense of our entangled emotions.
