Song Meaning of “Sweet Misery” by Sonny Burgess
“Sweet Misery” is a ballad that tells of a man’s longing for a woman’s love despite the pain and conflict that come along with it. He introduces the song by singing, “I could run and hide from the pain that I feel inside, but I can’t deny, it’s sweet misery”. Here, he is admitting to the emotions he’s feeling despite them being difficult for him. He understands that the love he has for her might bring him turmoil yet he chooses to stay and relish in it regardless.
The chorus speaks of how he is trusting in her despite not being sure if it will be enough. He sings, “Love is so blind, can I trust a heart of mine? I’m in too deep and I don’t know why, sweet misery”. He is almost daring himself to keep loving her and wanting her, to stay true to himself not matter how it plays out. But he also acknowledges that despite it being difficult, he loves her complicated nature and the tug of war of emotions she makes him feel.
The next verse speaks of how he is in search of solace and that no matter how hard he tries, negotiating with himself to stay or leave, there is no escape from the love he has for her. He sings, “so I search for peace in this storm of love, a place so far I can’t run too far enough…sweet misery”.
