Song Meaning of “Parting of the Way” by Peter Sterling
This song is about a person grappling with the difficult decision of whether or not to go their separate ways in a relationship. The person in the song is trying to think things through, but is unsure of what the right decision is. The lyrics – ‘I’m at a loss for words, I don’t know what to do’ – suggest the narrator is torn between two choices: staying together and breaking apart.
The narrator is worried about allowing the relationship to continue while knowing it will lead to no good or that ending it will bring out too much pain. Only time will tell which approach is best. Despite the uncertainty and difficult emotions involved, the narrator finds strength in themselves and the support of their loved ones to make the right choice.
The lines ‘I’ve a heart of gold, don’t be mistaken, give it away and I’m breaking’ suggest that although a difficult choice lies ahead, the character is aware that their heart is worth taking care of, and that making the wrong move will only stifle whatever love they have left. In the end, they must make the parting of the way to move on and grow.
