Song Meaning of “Do You Know” by Parasites

Do You Know is a compelling song filled with emotion and heartache that explores the idea of unrequited love. The protagonist of the song desperately cries out for a recognition of their feelings but is ultimately met with rejection. The song positions the listener in the position of the protagonist and asks us if we’ve ever felt the same way.

The opening line of the song, “If I show you I don’t care” speaks to the fact that the protagonist is trying to appear nonchalant about their true feelings and longing for a connection. This is followed soon after with “All I ever wanted was you” which directly contrasts with line one and speaks to how much the protagonist wants to be accepted and loved by the other person.

Throughout the song, the protagonist pleads to the person they love and asks them if they even care for them in return. This is especially highlighted in the chorus, “Do you know that I’m here? / Do you know that I care?”, which reflects the inner monologue of the protagonist.

The song ultimately ends with a sense of finality, a realization that, regardless of their plea, they will not get the love and affirmation they seek from the other person. The protagonist is left alone with their thoughts, and the listener is asked yet again if they have ever been in the same situation.
