Song Meaning of “Nowayback” by oOoOO
Nowayback by oOoOO is a track that speaks of the feeling of being stuck in a deep pit of despair with no way out. It speaks of the hopelessness and helplessness we often feel in life and how it can be overwhelming. The lyrics tell a tale of a person whose dreams and hopes are once again slipping away before their very eyes and how it feels to be confronted with an inescapable reality. The instrumentals convey this feeling of desperation and despair as a relentless beat drives forward and a dissonant guitar paints a bleak soundscape.
When we first enter the song our protagonist is presented as resigned to their fate of being stuck in a path of no return, singing “I can sense no way back from here”. Although they are aware of the reality that lies before them they still question this, how can you “sense” no way back when it doesn’t yet exist in the tangible form of a solution. It’s an admission of the emotion of giving up and acceptance of the fear of the unknown.
The chorus of the song encapsules this feeling of despair with the heartbreakingly honest lines of “I’m too far gone, too deep inside to save myself, so what’s a dream without a dreamer?”. This to me is a harrowing admission that all of the hope and wishful thinking in this world aren’t enough to save one from the all-consuming darkness of a pit of despair. It’s a realisation that the dream fuelling our ambition has no purpose without us to carry on that dream.
As the song fades we are left with a ringing guitar refrain that represents the cold reality of life and how it can often feel that there is nothing to do but to accept the permanency of it all. Nowayback is a heavy and emotional but at the same time a stunningly beautiful track about being overwhelmed by despair and the feeling that sometimes there is no way back.
