Song Meaning of “Lust” by Never Shout Never
Never Shout Never’s song ‘Lust’ is an exploration and reflection on the intricacies of physical and emotional attraction. The narrator expresses his feelings of simultaneously wanting, needing, and wanting to be consumed by someone, or something. But, at the same time being aware that all these feelings can be overwhelming and can potentially lead to destruction.
The song starts out with the narrator singing that he is “mesmerized,” and “defenseless” against the pull of lust, being unable to see straight and having forgotten the past. This speaks to the power that lusts holds, and the lack of control he has against it. Despite his lack of control, he embraces it and actively desires to give in and be “fulfilled” by it.
In the chorus, he speaks of his inner struggles between giving in to his desires, and wanting to associate himself with the idea of pure good and goodness. He is frustrated in his inability to reconcile the two as he wants “so hard” to be part of something greater, and yet still be “physically consumed by this unknown.” His desire for both things is overwhelming and conflicting, yet he is stuck in his current personal limbo.
In the second verse, the narrator continues to delve into the dichotomy between wanting to succumb to his desires, and to continue to stand firm in his good morals. He struggles with trying to make sense of it all, and is conflicted in his passion leading him astray from his original vision for life. Though, he is fully aware of his current state of indecision, lacking “clarity” and being entrapped by his current feelings.
Though he might be feeling lost in the overwhelming emotions brought on by lust, Never Shout Never shows that there is strength in understanding and being conscious of our conflicting emotions. Having lust is part of being human, and through understanding and coming to grips with it, one can choose the right course of action to take.
