Song Meaning of “Temptation” by Matthew Dear
‘Temptation’ speaks of a relationship that has gone wrong, and the temptation to remain in it, even though it has become toxic. In the chorus, Matthew Dear expresses a desire to break away, to stop walking the path of destruction, but he wonders if he can actually make the crucial decision to do so. He sings, “Finding my way out, I don’t know how”. He realizes that he needs someone to help lead him out of this mess he has made.
The song confronts the idea that remaining in the situation will bring only emptiness and pain, as he croons, “Crossing the line so we become undone, Heaven won’t save us and Hell won’t set us free.”
In the pre-chorus Matthew Dear hints at a greater truth: that he is chasing after something that cannot truly make him happy, and that there are other, healthier possibilities out there for him. He sings, “As I look back I realize, I was only chasing shadows of myself”.
Ultimately ‘Temptation’ is a reflection on the fragility of relationships and the cruel consequences of acting on temptation. It stands as a rawn and powerful reminder that, while the idea of making a change and starting anew may be daunting, it is always worth taking the chance.
