Song Meaning of “The Broken” by Lit
This song is a reflective look at a crumbling relationship and the regret the narrator feels for not being able to save it. The feeling of loss and emptiness are palpable in the words like “lonely is all I know” and “we never knew what went wrong”. The lyrics touch upon the power of reminiscing and of old memories to bring back the pain of a broken relationship.
The chorus is particularly poignant, with the words “No need to talk it over, it’s already done. Nothing left to be said, I’d be better off running. What good would it do me to pick up the pieces, the broken’s already come undone.” The narrator is coming to terms with the reality that the relationship is over and gone and no amount of talking will fix it.
The song ends on an ultimately hopeful note though. The narrator has accepted the brokenness and rather than selfishly ‘turning tail and running’ they accept that they can’t fix it and they let go. In the final lines they sing “And it’s okay that I’m feeling alright, I can walk away knowing I tried.” Here the narrator is acknowledging that although their efforts to save the relationship were all for naught, they have moved on knowing they did everything in their power to try and repair it.
