Song Meaning of “It’s Not True” by Keane
It’s Not True tells the story of a relationship between two people that is struggling due to the constant lies and deceit of one partner. It talks of pain, uncertainty, confusion, and despair that comes with trying to figure out the truth and the lack of trust in their relationship.
The song opens up with the lyrics, “You made me believe in something that wasn’t true, something you sold me like an old dress or shoes”, which serves as a metaphor for the partner’s deceptions. The narrator is trying to figure out why things have changed so much and why they can no longer believe in what may once have been true.
The chorus is a plea to the other person, “Please don’t lie to me no more, when I see your eyes I’m finding it harder to ignore, can’t believe in what I see, it’s not true”. Here, the narrator is desperate for understanding, for the other person to be honest and truthful. They are asking their partner to look them in the eyes so that they can confront what’s being said and find out if it’s actually true or not.
The bridge acknowledges the helplessness felt in this situation, “Don’t know what I’m supposed to do, it just won’t heal”.
