Song Meaning of “Money – Live At Panther Hall, Fort Worth, TX/1966” by Jerry Lee Lewis
This song tells the story of how money can be both a sweet blessing and a dangerous curse. The narrator sings, “Money, oh money, money, is more precious than gold. It can buy you everything in this mortal world, but it can’t buy you a soul.” He is referring to the fact that money can bring you all the material things you want, but it can never replace and buy peace of mind or the things that money just can’t buy. It is saying that money will not last forever and it also won’t bring you anything in the after life, so it’s important to find wealth in something other than material possessions.
The narrator then goes on to sing, “Money can bring you trouble, it sure can do me wrong. It can take away your freedom and steal away your song.” He is saying that when you become too consumed with money and greed you can lose sight of the real and important things in life. Money can lead to corruption and destruction of those wonderful things such as music, love and family which are far more valuable than money.
The narrator continues to sing, “Money, oh money, money, you can never pass the test. Money will only give you happiness when you live out here in the west.” This is saying that money won’t bring you genuine contentment and joy, no matter where you live.
