Song Meaning of “Somebody to Love” by Jefferson Airplane
“Somebody to Love” by Jefferson Airplane is a song about finding companionship and someone to love. The opening lines expresses the protagonist’s craving for emotional connection, noting that “When the truth is found to be lies/And all the joy within you dies/Don’t you want somebody to love/Don’t you need somebody to love”. He believes that having someone to share his life with will help to cure his loneliness and offset his inner turmoil.
The second verse dives deeper into his feelings of desperation as he becomes conscious of his own vulnerability. He boldly states “Don’t you want somebody to love/Don’t you need somebody to love”. His need for love is consuming him, and he needs to find somebody to quench this emotional thirst.
The chorus reflects upon his emotional state as his desire for companionship overrides his sense of logic. He muses on how one can love somebody even when no logical explanation can be found for it: “You say I only hear what I want to/I don’t listen hard, don’t listen long/You said I only hear what I want to/I don’t listen hard, don’t talk long”. The protagonist realizes that it is his heart that needs to be listened to, rather than his logical mind.
