Song Meaning of “Except When I’m Talking to You” by Eytan Mirsky
This song is about the loneliness and isolation of modern life. The narrator is trying to connect with people around him, but they often don’t understand his feelings or intentions. He expresses his frustration through the line “Except when I’m talking to you/Nobody ever hears me”. He yearns to be understood but the people he’s surrounded by don’t seem to get him. This feeling of loneliness is further emphasized in the chorus: “And I’m just a number on a list/And a face on a TV screen/And it’s everybody else but nobody seems to hear me”.
In the end the narrator is left with a bittersweet understanding that only he can truly understand himself. The message of the song is that striving for true connection can be a difficult, but rewarding journey. The narrator is ultimately left hopeful, believing that he will eventually find someone who can truly see and hear him— “Maybe one of these days somebody just might take me as I am”.
