Song Meaning of “Skeleton Man” by Dwight Twilley
Skeleton Man is a song about facing your fears and recognizing that real strength and courage is found in accepting and embracing our own vulnerability. The narrator knows he should “run away” from the feelings of insecurity he has been experiencing, but he believes that “hiding in the dark won’t set [him] free.” Instead of running away, the narrator decides to confront his “Skeleton Man”, his inner self, and accept what he is and who he is. He decides to “show his true face,” metaphorically speaking, and face himself and his vulnerabilities, embracing them so he can carry on and live a full life.
By facing his fears and facing “Skeleton Man” head on, the narrator finds true strength and is able to move forward and become whole. He promises himself that “he will never hide” and in that decision lies his hope for a brighter future. He understands that being vulnerable isn’t a sign of weakness but a sign of strength in and of itself. He has finally realized the power of being honest and vulnerable with himself and opens up to the realizations of his self-acceptance and the recognition of his own strength and courage.
