Song Meaning of “Razors.Out” by Chino Moreno
“Razors.Out” is a song by Chino Moreno that reflects on the price of success and the pain of leaving the past behind. It describes the narrator’s journey of striving to reach success, and sacrificing parts of himself to do so. In the process, the narrator is forced to make difficult decisions, cutting away parts of himself that no longer serve him, like a razor.
The song reflects on what it costs to make it in life, and the loneliness that can haunt even the most successful. In verse one the narrator reflects on how he had to give up his innocence to succeed: “It used to be so green and so wide, now we hollow and run/Take a step back and look inside, knowledge can be so dumb”. He believes he has a certain wisdom from what he has been through, but it is a bittersweet victory, as his success has cost him some essential aspects of his personality.
The chorus urges the narrator to let go of everything he once had and keep moving forward:
“And so we pray for another way
Only a razor can cut this deep
Don’t look away I’ll follow you wherever you go — razors out”.
