Song Meaning of “Hate Bein’ Sober” by Chief Keef

‘Hate Bein’ Sober’ by Chief Keef expresses the artist’s dissatisfaction with being in a sober state. He expresses his disdain for the lifestyle of abstinence, and wishes he could be drinking or using drugs to ease his pain and make life more enjoyable. The song is an anthem for youth struggling with addiction, as he sings “I don’t wanna go to school, gotta stay high all the time/To keep away from the lame life, an’ I can’t wait ’til I’m done.” The chorus of the song echoes his wish for an escape from the sober mundane life as he sings “Wish I had me pills so I could cope with this shit/ Think I need an 8-ball, so I can speak on this shit.” He clearly wants to use drugs to stick his emotions away and numb the pain he feels inside from being sober. The song is a very honest insight into the life of addiction, as he acknowledges both the highs and lows of his addiction, from “Pop a bottle, I can make the pain go away” to his favourite thing “when I’m faded in the mornin’, I don’t give a fuck about a thing”. For Chief Keef, being sober isn’t enjoyable, and he longs for an escape from the humdrum lifestyle he leads without substances.
