Song Meaning of “Boxing Day” by blink-182
“Boxing Day” by blink-182 is a song about the struggle to make sense of a failing relationship. The narrator is coming to terms with the imminent end of a relationship and is searching for understanding and closure, but finding it’s not so easy.
The song starts off with the idea of boxing up the memories, feelings, and emotions that the two have shared. The stanza references a “Klein’s bottle,” a topological object that is impossible to empty, which suggest the narrator is finding it hard to let go and move on. He tries to make sense of the emotions by putting a physical representation to it, but finds that it’s a paradox, that nothing can give closure to the relationship.
The chorus speaks of a need for both a physical and a verbal goodbye. A hug to signify the emotion that was shared, but also words to “change it all” and start the process of ending what was once a meaningful connection.
The outro reflects a sense of acceptance and resignation as the narrator comes to terms with the fact that there are moments and relationships that can’t always be salvaged, and that’s okay. He still has the memories and their time together and now it’s time to move on and find peace.
