Song Meaning of “Vultures” by AxeWound

“Vultures” by AxeWound tells the story of a survivor who has persevered in spite of overwhelming difficulties. The narrator paints a picture of a person who has faced a great many struggles during their life but is still standing strong. The vultures in the song are used as an analogy for these difficulties, and the song paints a picture of the narrator eventually overcoming them.

The first verse sets the tone, with the narrator describing the ever-present feeling of impending doom which lingers around them. They state that ‘everyday it’s like the vultures closing in’, implying that the struggles they face are inescapable and they feel as though they can never get away from them.

The chorus speaks of the narrator’s resiliency, outlining that they have survived in spite of the difficulties life has thrown at them. The powerful lyrics ‘they’ll never take me alive’ speaks to their strong will and determination to survive, however difficult the battle may be.

The second verse tells of the narrator’s transition from a mentality of survival to one of strength and progress. Where the first verse speaks of them merely surviving, here they are described as ‘hiding in the rocks, becoming one with the ground’, only to ‘come out flying, breaking free from my chains’. The power and strength of the imagery speaks to the narrator’s transformation from merely surviving to being able to come out of their ordeal stronger for it.
