Song Meaning of “Die Walküre / Zweiter Aufzug: Was keinem in Worten ich künde” by Richard Wagner
This song is about a character called Siegmund, who is in turmoil as the gods have taken away his beloved. He is desperate to get her back and is in anguish over her loss. As the lyrics go;
“What no words could ever tell
My heart feels – a piercing pain
No words that could ever say
The sorrow that I feel today”
The song speaks of his intense longing and sorrow of being separated from the one he loves. He has been abandoned and feels his life has no purpose or direction. He is unable to express his anguish through any words and so he relies on his music to indicate his distress.
He sings that he feels bereft and his love has been taken away from him. He pleads with the gods to bring back his lost love. He expresses that his life is meaningless without her and is desperate to get her back. He realises their love is part of a larger destiny and is willing to do whatever it takes to reunite with her.
He sings of her beauty and express his love for her and how he will never forget her and will gather her in his arms once again. He has faith that if he keeps going, the gods will eventually grant him his wish. The song expresses the anguish and hopefulness of the ultimate reunion between him and his beloved.
