Song Meaning of “To Catch a Flame” by Oceans Ate Alaska
To Catch a Flame tells the story of a person who is desperately trying to reignite their passion within a seemingly broken relationship. They strive to tap into the feeling of love they had once before, but they are worried that stoking the flame might only cause more pain in the end. The lyrics are filled with a sense of regret and longing, as the person cannot seem to bring back the “fading light” of the past.
The chorus conveys the idea of both wanting to go back to the golden days of the relationship and yet being terrified at the same time. By saying “I can’t save the present from us”, the person is expressing that they do not believe the relationship can be salvaged. The person wonders if the cost of trying to recapture the spark of love is too high, wondering if they “should just let it die”.
However, they ultimately choose to try anyway, to take that seemingly-impossible decision of “catching a flame” and bringing the passion they once shared back to life. Through the song the person expresses their desire to try and keep the relationship alive, and that, at the end of the day, it’s worth the risk—no matter what the outcome may be.
