Song Meaning of “Empty House” by Delta Spirit
‘Empty House’ by Delta Spirit is a song about being even more aware of one’s loneliness than before – now it is in a house in which no one else remains. The narrator is reflecting on how their previous partner has moved away, and the loneliness that has come along with that. They sing of how they never saw it as being a possibility and how they have to come to terms with it in order to move forward. Empty rooms and empty hallways echo back the loneliness that has been brought on by the departure, and the narrator feels adrift without the person who used to inhabit the space.
The song is a reminder to embrace loneliness instead of being scared of it. Where a partner once brought joy to amidst the misery, the narrator is now needing to face it head-on, learning from it and making peace with it. In the chorus Delta Spirit urge the listener to “take your eyes of the prize and take a second look,” to really take the time to listen to yourself and understand what you are feeling.
The narrator’s feelings of loneliness evolve into peace and acceptance as the song comes to an end. They are ready to move forward, to take the lessons learned from their relationship, embracing the “empty house” because it is a part of the journey to finding happiness.
