Song Meaning of “Overbiter” by Say Anything
‘Overbiter’ is a song by Say Anything, an American rock band. The song talks about how sometimes our emotions are so strong and powerful that they can take over our lives, especially when it comes to love, so much so that we can become ‘overbiters’ in the situation – essentially trapped in a cycle of heartache and pain.
The song starts off with the singer crying out for help, begging someone to save him. He knows he’s “dangerously deep” in this emotion and needs someone to come and pull him out of the storm. He doesn’t want to “be a prisoner of love no more,” as he sees it slowly destroying him. He wants to break free from the cycle but can’t seem to find the strength to do so.
The chorus brings to light just how much the person is drinking in the emotion, how the more he drinks it the more he gets addicted to it – he’s literally an “overbiter.” But despite his addiction, he’s desperate to be saved, to be given leads and guidance to get out of this destructive cycle. He’s seeking solace in someone else, knowing that the only way out is to be pulled up together.
The next verse sees the singer get very self-critical, blaming himself for becoming an ‘overbiter.’ He can’t help mourn his losses and failures, as the heartache cuts so deep that it overwhelms him. He’s insecure in himself and his choices, making it all the more difficult to make progress in his own journey of finding a way out. But he knows the only way to break free is to push through despite how hard and difficult it may be – to find the courage and strength within himself.
The bridge of the song speaks to the raw emotions that the singer has experienced – there’s no way to escape it. That’s why he thought he’d never find his way out, until he realised that if he continues to believe and hope, eventually he’ll be able to make it. He believes that if he continues to push forward, one day he’ll find liberation and freedom from these overwhelming negative emotions.
